And don't worry - there won't be a language barrier. Our bilingual owner (who grew up on Isle Madame) lives on site so you have 24/7, direct access to the boss lady who knows the area!
In February 2018, the former L'Auberge Acadienne Inn began it's transformation into The Clairestone Inn thanks to creative and enthusiastic new owner/operator Shauna Austin.
Shauna is also the owner of City Girl Cakes. She is thrilled to be living back in her hometown of Isle Madame, Cape Breton and she will be on a cake sabbatical until 2019 as she finds her way through this new adventure. Please feel free to continue to read her journey to caking below...
WTF!?? That was a common reaction when I told people I'd quit my full-time corporate career with pension and benefits... to make cakes.
Then again, it was also a common reaction when I dyed my hair bleach-blond and pierced my ear eight times in Grade 11.
I’m a proud Caper (Cape Breton, NS), who left the nest in 1992 for a BBA at Acadia University, in 1996 wore dressy clothes and played in the financial services industry for a little over a decade and then in 2007 discovered I'm happiest when I'm creating. So, in 2008, I threw myself into this crazy idea and haven't looked back.
You have to do what fires you up! I love every aspect of the design process but the very best part is seeing it all come together - that magnificent, wonderful, artistic cake creation that represents so many unique aspects of the recipient and puts a smile on everyone's face.
What else fires me up? Music. Laughing. Lifting heavy weights. My Harley Davidson. Oh... and my kids (a boy and a girl who make me laugh every single day and give endless lessons in creativity) – they’re pretty cool, too.
And I love to break the rules. So, come on - let's take this cake world by storm. There are no limits. No boundaries. Only fabulously sweet, edible art.
